Oil Painting Materials and Methods Lectures with demonstrations, Summer 2024 

These three Talks are designed both for the beginner who would like to know more about the methods and materials of oil painting, and also practising artists who would like to have a deeper understanding of their painting practise.

In each workshop Mark will give a brief history of oil painting techniques, discuss different methods and materials, and demonstrate a proven, practical way to mix colours. He will show examples of different materials and demonstrate different techniques.

1st Lecture (15 June)

Supports, Grounds and Primers

–   a brief history of oil painting supports

  • different types of painting supports, with examples of each
  • how to stretch a canvas, demonstration 
  • different types of grounds, including demonstration
  • different types of priming to achieve different effects, including demonstration

2nd Lecture (29 June)

Oil paints, mediums and varnishes

  • a brief history of oil paints
  • different qualities and characteristics of coloured pigments, with demonstrations
  • different solvents, painting mediums, glazes and varnishes, with demonstrations

3rd Lecture (13 July)

Colour mixing in practice

  • different brushes
  • choice of palettes and how to lay out paints
  • choosing different palettes of colours
  • important terms for colour mixing
  • how to mix colours simply and logically

About Mark Beaven

Mark is a professional painter and experienced tutor. He founded the Nottingham Art Studio and  has run private art classes for over 20 years .

He has an honours degree in Painting and a Masters degree oil Fine Art Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art, London. He has been a regular contributor to The Artist magazine (2008-10), and previously worked as a Sales Adviser for Cornelissen & Son Specialist Fine Art Materials Supplier, London. He has tutored and given demonstrations at many Art colleges and Art Societies, and has taught drawing and painting courses for The Open College of Arts.

Each workshop will run from 10.30-1pm, with a coffee break. The fee is £10 per workshop or £25 for all three.
